How to Estimate Plywood and Laminate Quantities for Your Project
Get the sheet count right the first time — reordering mid-installation costs more than a buffer would have.
Why the Estimate Matters More Than It Seems
A plywood or laminate shortfall doesn't just mean a delay — it means a second delivery, a second round of stock confirmation, and for laminate specifically, a real risk that the replacement sheet comes from a different production batch with a slightly different shade. Getting the estimate right the first time is worth the extra ten minutes of math.
The Basic Coverage Calculation
Standard plywood and laminate sheets are 8×4 ft (96×48 in), covering 32 sq ft per sheet. The core calculation is straightforward:
Total surface area needed ÷ 32 sq ft per sheet = base sheet count
For a wardrobe with, say, 180 sq ft of total carcass and shutter surface (adding up every panel — sides, shelves, back, shutters, not just the visible front), that's 180 ÷ 32 ≈ 5.6, rounded up to 6 sheets before any wastage allowance.
Add a Wastage Allowance
The base calculation assumes zero waste, which no real cutting job achieves. A working allowance of 10-15% covers offcuts, cutting errors, and the unusable trim left over when a panel's dimensions don't divide evenly into an 8×4 sheet. Applied to the example above: 6 sheets × 1.12 (a 12% allowance) ≈ 6.7, rounded up to 7 sheets.
Plywood: Estimate by Element, Not Just Total Area
Rather than one lump total-area number, break the estimate down by element — carcass panels, shelves, shutters, back panel — since each often uses a different thickness. A wardrobe carcass might use 18mm ply while the back panel uses 6mm or 8mm; lumping them into one thickness-agnostic total area will overstate the thicker-grade sheet count you actually need. Estimate each thickness tier separately, then apply the wastage allowance to each.
Laminate: Account for Both Faces and Match Direction
Laminate is typically applied to both the visible face and, depending on the design, the interior face of a shutter or panel — don't estimate only the outward-facing surface if the interior gets laminated too. For a wardrobe with a consistent grain direction (wood-look finishes especially), also account for the fact that laminate sheets have a grain orientation — cutting against the grain to save material can produce a visibly mismatched result across adjacent panels, so factor grain-direction cutting into the wastage allowance rather than assuming maximum material efficiency.
Adhesive and Hardware — Don't Forget the Small-Ticket Items
Sheet material estimates get the most attention, but adhesive and hardware quantities are just as easy to under-order and just as capable of stalling an installation. A rough adhesive quantity scales with total bonded surface area (check the specific product's coverage rate per pack), and hardware should be counted per unit — hinges, channels and handles per wardrobe or cabinet, not a single lump estimate for the whole project.

A common working allowance is 10-15% on top of the calculated coverage area, to account for offcuts, grain-matching waste, and the occasional damaged or miscut sheet. Complex cabinetry with a lot of small cut pieces or curved profiles tends toward the higher end of that range; large flat panels with minimal cutting can often get away with less.
Do I need to order extra to match dye lots or batches?
For laminate especially, yes — colour can vary marginally between production batches, so ordering all the sheets for one visible run (a full wardrobe front, for instance) from the same batch avoids a visible seam in colour. If your project spans multiple phases with a gap between them, flag this when ordering rather than discovering a batch mismatch after installation.
