Choosing the Right Plywood Grade for Your Project
Grade is the first decision, and the one most likely to go wrong. Four letters do the real work — MR, BWR, BWP, and FR — and mixing them up is how a wardrobe swells in a monsoon or a kitchen cabinet delaminates over a sink.
MR (Moisture Resistant) is the default for normal interior use — cabinets, wardrobes, and furniture in dry rooms. It isn't built for standing water or constant humidity, so keep it out of bathrooms and kitchens.
BWR (Boil Water Resistant) sits a step up, tolerating occasional splashes and damp conditions without being rated for continuous water contact.
BWP (Boiling Water Proof) is the highest bonding standard in plywood, tested by boiling. It's the standard choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere moisture is a daily fact of life, not an occasional one.
FR (Fire Retardant) is treated to slow the spread of flame, and shows up most often in commercial interiors, public buildings, and any space with stricter fire-safety requirements.
