Best Plywood for Kitchen Cabinets in Hyderabad

The short answer

For a kitchen in Hyderabad, use BWP plywood made to IS 710, in 18 or 19 mm, for the sink unit, every base cabinet and anything next to the hob, dishwasher or washing machine. For wall cabinets and tall units on a dry wall, BWR or MR plywood made to IS 303 is acceptable and costs less. Use 12 mm for shelves and 6 mm for drawer bottoms and backs. Laminate both faces of every panel and seal every cut edge.

Kitchen plywood by zone

If the budget allows, using BWP for every cabinet removes the risk of a plumber, a leak or a later layout change putting MR plywood next to water.

What the plywood grades mean

Indian plywood grades come from two Bureau of Indian Standards specifications.

• MR and BWR are made to IS 303:2024, the BIS standard for general purpose plywood. MR resists humidity and occasional splashes. BWR holds up to boiling water for longer than MR but is still an interior-grade bond.
• BWP marine plywood is made to IS 710:2024, the BIS standard for marine plywood. Its boiling-water-proof (BWP) bond passes the 72-hour boiling water test, and the standard adds tighter rules on veneer quality and defects, which is why it is the grade for anything below the counter.

At the counter, "BWP", "710" and "marine" usually mean the same IS 710 sheet, but not every BWP-bonded sheet meets IS 710. The words printed on a sheet's edge are not proof of grade, so ask for the IS marking and the manufacturer's test certificate. Why 18 mm is sold as 19 mm

Carpenters in Hyderabad order "18 mm" for kitchen carcasses and shutters. Most plywood brands list that same sheet as 19 mm nominal, so do not be surprised when a quote says 19 mm. What matters for a modular kitchen is that the sheet is calibrated, meaning its thickness is consistent across the sheet, because hinges, channels and minifix joints are set to a fixed thickness. Plywood, HDHMR or MDF for kitchen shutters

The carcass and the shutters do different jobs, so many kitchens use different boards for each.

• BWP plywood shutters hold hinge screws well over years of daily use, are lighter for tall shutters and tolerate the odd wet hand.

What kitchen plywood costs in Hyderabad

Checks before you buy kitchen plywood

1. The IS marking. BWP sheets for the sink zone should carry IS 710; MR and BWR sheets IS 303. Ask for the test certificate with the invoice.
2. Calibration. For a modular kitchen with fixed-thickness hardware, ask for calibrated sheets and check a few with a vernier at delivery.
3. One grade per zone, labelled. If you mix BWP and MR in one kitchen, mark the BWP sheets before they reach the carpenter, so the sink unit is not cut from the wrong stack.
4. Both faces laminated. A laminate or liner on both faces keeps panels flat and stops moisture getting in through the inner face.
5. Every edge sealed. Water enters plywood through its edges first. Edge band every cut edge, including the hidden ones inside the sink unit.
6. The warranty in writing. Warranty terms belong to the manufacturer and vary by range, so ask for the brand's own warranty card for the exact product.

Common kitchen plywood mistakes

• MR under the sink to save money. The saving on two or three sheets is small next to rebuilding a swollen sink unit.
• Thin shelves on long spans. A 12 mm shelf sags over a long span once it carries steel vessels; add a support or move to 18 mm.
• Unsealed cut-outs. The hole cut for the sink or a pipe is raw plywood edge in the wettest spot of the kitchen. Seal it before the sink goes in.
• Sheets stored on a wet floor. On site, keep plywood stacked flat on battens, off a freshly mopped or cured floor.
