Why Calibrated Plywood Matters

The spec sheet line most buyers skip — and the one that decides how flat your shutters sit.

The Spec Buyers Overlook

Most plywood buying decisions come down to grade (MR vs BWP) and thickness. Calibration rarely makes the shortlist of questions asked, but it's the spec that decides how the sheet actually behaves once it's in a fabricator's hands — how flat it lies, how evenly a laminate or veneer bonds to it, and whether a stack of "18mm" panels are actually all 18mm.

What "Calibrated" Actually Means

A calibrated sheet has been run through a sizing/sanding process that holds thickness to a tight, stated tolerance — for example, +/-0.25mm — across the full face of the panel, not just at the point it was measured for the label. Both-side calibration means both faces are sanded to this tolerance, so the sheet is uniform through its thickness, not just flat on one side.

Without calibration, a sheet sold as "18mm" plywood can vary by a millimetre or more from corner to corner. That's invisible on the shelf, but it shows up the moment the panel goes into production.

What to Check Before You Buy

Ask specifically whether the sheet is calibrated, and on which side(s) — "both side calibrated" is the stronger claim and worth confirming on the spec sheet or batch stamp rather than taking on trust.
