Where It Doesn't Help — and What to Use Instead

HDHMR is moisture-resistant, not waterproof, and the distinction matters most exactly where people assume it doesn't: directly under a sink, in a cabinet that could see a leak or standing water, or anywhere genuinely wet rather than humid. The Installation Detail That Determines Real-World Performance

HDHMR's moisture resistance is a property of the board itself — but a cabinet is built from cut edges, and an unsealed cut edge is the point where moisture actually gets in, regardless of how resistant the board's face is. Proper edge banding (a PVC or laminate edge strip sealed onto every exposed cut) is what turns HDHMR's lab-rated moisture resistance into real-world performance in a humid kitchen or bathroom. A well-specified board with poorly sealed edges will still swell at those edges over time — this is an installation-quality issue, not a material failure, but it's the detail that most determines whether HDHMR actually performs as advertised.
