MDF is the cheapest flat panel that takes a paint finish properly, which is why it dominates wall panelling, painted shutters and display joinery. It is also the board most often misused — an interior-grade REG sheet put somewhere it meets water will swell and never recover.
The grade split is the thing to get right. IS 12406 REG is the interior grade; MR is the exterior/moisture-resistant grade and costs meaningfully more. Both are in the table below with their certification and full thickness range.
Rates are per sq.ft excluding GST and are the band each board is quoted across; MDF here runs from under 2mm to 30mm, which is why the bands are wide.

The grade is printed on the board and it is the only thing that tells you where the sheet can go.

None of these grades is waterproof. For anything that meets standing water, the correct material is IS 710 BWP plywood, not a fibre board.

Wall panelling
The main use. REG grade takes a primer and paint finish better than any plywood.
Painted shutters
MDF holds a sprayed finish flat and seamless. Use MR grade in kitchens.
Display and retail joinery
REG grade for anything indoors and dry, where the panel is finished rather than structural.
Where not to use MDF
Carcass sides carrying hinges, shelving under load, and anything near water. The edge is the weak point in all three cases.
