Natural vs reconstituted vs engineered veneer
All three are real wood sliced thin. What separates them is whether the log or a process decided the grain — and that is the whole basis of the price gap.

Veneer is a finish, not a structure. Whatever leaf goes on the visible face, a balancing backer goes on the reverse or the panel will cup — the same rule as laminate.

Natural veneer on 18mm MR ply, book-matched or slip-matched across the panel run. This is where the leaf-to-leaf matching work is worth paying for and where it has to be agreed before slicing, not after.
Wardrobe and unit faces
Reconstituted or natural smoke veneer where a large area must read as one continuous piece. A natural species here means living with visible variation between doors.
Reception and boardroom joinery
Premium natural species — teak, walnut, oak — where the veneer is the reason the room looks expensive. Order the whole project's leaf area in one lot from one flitch.
Where a laminate is the better call
High-traffic horizontals, kitchen shutters that get wiped daily, and any budget-led run where matched natural leaves cannot be justified. A woodgrain laminate is more honest there than a thin natural veneer that wears through.
